It is done! the ref sheet has been created, been working WAY too long on it, for over a year or so from initial sketching.
Well at least it's done now, hopefully it can help people figure out what my character looks like, or at least get an idea of it. I'd like to think I've improved my painfully moderate artist skills in the process of creating this, a lot of new techniques have been tried and tested. I will most likely continue using them as well since the results were better then what they were before.
The front pose is terrible IMO and I will change it as soon as I can, I lost the lineart somewhere while making this so I became a bit unsure of where things should go. I will try to make a new picture of him in a front pose and then I can paste the results in to cover up the dreadfulness that's up there. Sorry for that.
As he is a difficult character to draw (well I think so at any rate) I'm inclined to give people a little bit of artistic freedom when drawing him. I can't expect people to copy over all that I have done so small amounts of creative freedom is given so long as it's kept to a certain degree (I will need to be able to tell it's me after all) to befit their own artistic style etc.
Questions are still appreciated and answered below, as well as some basic info from the base colour picture;
THE LIGHTS CHANGES ACCORDING TO MOOD. Special I know? We all gotta have something that puts us apart from the pack, desire breeds need which breeds creativity after all ^^ I'm really happy with how this general design is coming out so far, let's see if I can add in some nice textures on the last version as well as some half decent background, just to flesh it all out you know?
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to make surface textures for a) plastics and b) metals please do tell me since I will need to know that for the last version. Thank you!
QnA which was carried over from the last version, please ask more questions if you'd like! The design can only become more fleshed out the more questions that are asked! ^^
1. How long ago was it for his "birth" or construction?
'Well see he is part of a people that ages ago gave up their bodies to survive an ever more hostile world, they then went into a deep hibernation to wait till their world was more hospitable. So technically he was born from his biological mother some 100+ years ago, but his awakening as a conscious, thinking machine was only some 20+ years ago. I'm not too sure on the exact age though.'
2. Does his voice sound robotic or is it more clear?
'His voice sounds like a slightly distorted human voice, they try to replicate the 'real thing' as close as possible but every once in a while you'll notice that the pitch might be a bit off or that there's a slight echo in it etc. Most people gets used to it pretty soon though.'
3. Can his say hands rotate 360* around their joint or are they as turn-able as humanoids?
'He's got a skeleton which resembles the humanoid one (just more angular, not so very curvy) underneath of the fiberplastic muscles, however technically this would not be a limiting factor when it comes to the rotation. Instead it's all the viring inside his wrist leading to the muscles in the hands and all the pressure sensors leading to fine motor control. They can only stretch a certain degreebefore snapping. So yes theoretically he could rotate them like propellers but after say 200 degrees the wiring would snap and his hand would be more or less useless.'
4. I'm wondering, does his mouth open and close or not?
'No that mouthpiece is just a smaller piece of the head section which houses the voice modulators and some light diodes, beyond this it serves no function. In fact he could survive without a head at all since the center of his thought is in his chest rather then his head. The head is just there to serve as a platform from which information is gathered through sensors and to aid in communication with other species (you'd rather talk to a head with a recognizable face rather then just a pair of shoulders with some sensors sticking out of it).'
5. Also, what does he run on?
'He runs on an internal power supply that continually produces electricity. I'm not 100% clear on how it works on a technical level but her's my thoughts so far. His power supply is powered by an electric charge gradient, he has a store of positively ionized hydrogen (liquid since solid would take too much cooling) which all repel each other. These ions have a channel to liquid chlorine which can donate the electrons to make the ions more stable. However to pass through this channel the hydrogens needs to pass a series of tiny (nano sized) synthetic enzymes arranged so that only a small fraction can pass at a time. Think of it as a river with a series of waterwheels.'
'When the current runs the enzymes removes an electron from a Na atom and the electron has to wander through the electric wire system to return to the source (a track which is tightly regulated). The system is regulated by the enzymes responsible for each track slides in an out of the channel so that only the enzymes where the current is supposed to flow generates the electrons.'
'but like I said this is a theory I'm not sure if it's actually work practically. ^^'
6: Does he have a girlfriend?!
'He's taken by a very special someone which he loves very much <3 "
7: Is he married?
'Technically no since there's not been any cermony but he jokingly states he's "practically married" since he's so close to his partner. ^^ '
8. What he was designed for, combat, construction, service etc etc?
'You misunderstand, he's not a designed, programmed automaton meant to just do a single task. He is a concious being with the mentality of a fully grown biological entity. Think of it like general greivus from Star Wars 3, he was a biological entity heavily augmented with cybernetics. Well my robo-nubbie is like that but all of him has been replaced with cybernetics, so in a sense he's "beyond the flesh" sorts of say.'
9. Can he also do the Robot?
'No, certainly not, he has about as little coordination with his limbs as I do IRL
10: I guess what I'm asking is if he has any elemental weakness like being exposed to heat or water. But I doubt they do considering they are rather sturdy.
"Yes and no at the same time actually, he obviously doesn't have the limitations of a biological body so he can sustain both heat and cold very well, he can also venture into both low and high pressure environments and completely oxygen free environments. He is however limited in how long he can run without resupplying himself with power, although he doesn't need to refuel as often as a biological being it is harder for him to actually acquire it (more on that if anyone asks).
His main problems would be with wet, acidic (this is rather limited to his sensory organs though) and grainy environments like sand and gravel or snow, mud is an absolute mess for him also since all of these gets into the joints and makes them harder to move. His feet aren't designed for such surfaces and he easily sinks into them due to his added weight and small surface area. That said he can wear suits over his body to help protect himself from it and there are bodies designed specifically for these environments itself which he potentially could use."
thanks for watching!
